Collection: The Water Gallery: Fine Art Nature Photography

I was taken by this location while hiking along the Slate River near Crested Butte Colorado and thought it would make a great landscape photo.  I love the weathered stumps interspersed with wildflowers, and the lazy river leading the eye to Crested Butte Mountain gently reflecting the evening glow in the western sky.  

My wife and I spent time in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado this fall, and it was a spectacular experience.  These mountains are always breathtaking, and the fall colors and snowy mountains enhanced the beauty. We had been following this river for a while.  I had been enjoying the stately elm (?) trees and colorful shrubs lining it, looking for a public bridge or curve in the road that would allow me a great shot.  Alas, it was difficult to find: either the river didn't lead the eye to a suitable "payoff", the light was wrong, or it was just too 'messy' with brush and dead trees and branches in the river.  That is until we found this location: beautiful lighting, colorful trees and brush along the river, and  the rocky river leading to the mountain replete with aspen and meadows, and interesting clouds in the sky.   Do note the sister image: Fall River in the San Juan Mountains II.  After struggling to decide whether I preferred the horizontal or vertical version of this fine art landscape image, I realized that both are great!  

A bench invites passers-by to relax alongside a gentle mountain river at dusk.  I rarely include manmade objects in my nature photos, but I couldn't pass up this image while hiking along this beautiful river in central Colorado. This landscape photography print captures the glorious blue and green tones, the murmur of the river, and the fading light of dusk, compelling us to rest and soak up the peacefulness.

When my wife and I checked out the Carolinas for our next career move, we spent some time in Smoky Mountain National Park. The fall leaves were starting to turn, and we had a magical drive through the fall foliage. I was particularly struck by the Little River, and I love the way the trees bend over this peaceful, rocky river glowing with the golden light of fall. No wonder this is a favorite nature photography image!

I always find the bubbling of a creek to be peaceful. In this nature photography image, the early fall colors accentuated the restfulness in Castlewood Canyon state Park, CO.  Of course that doesn't mean it was restful taking the image: I had to balance on rocks with my tripod, and they can get slippery.  Let's just say I had a chance to experience the "refreshing" water more than I intended ...

The beauty of sunlit cottonwoods, a life-giving river, foreboding clouds, and the hawk, watching over all.  

This is another image from my amazing sunset hike along the Slate river near Crested Butte, Colorado.  I was captured by the composition and colors in this mountain scene: the blues and greens of the mountains and trees; the way the clouds are tinted pale lavender, the light on the river and foreground vegetation, and the winding river leading you into the scene.  All in all, a beautiful and peaceful fine art landscape photography print!

Farther up Horsethief falls one can find this fall peaking between the trees and granite boulders. I loved how the light caught the the scene, particularly the simple lines of the water and how they were mirrored by the tree trunks framing the water.  All in all, a beautiful, restful nature photography image!

Trees arch over the water and are perfectly reflected in the lake through the fog. The peace and quiet was palpable during this unusual, foggy morning in the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area in central Illinois.  I took this image about 20 minutes before sunrise while sitting on a floating dock, and had to be very careful not to create ripples in the water that would disrupt the reflections!  Fine art nature photograph by McClusky Nature Photography.

When I saw this location in the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, I knew it would be a perfect landscape photography print if shot in the early morning.  I took this nature image about 15 minutes before dawn as the eastern sky was glowing a golden orange.  I love the way the morning light reflects off the water and the frosty grass and rushes, while  silhouetting the tree and distant blue mountains.  What a peaceful morning for this nature image!

We had a lot of spring and summer rains that kept this waterfall running well into the summer.  I really loved the way the early morning light emphasized the water and textured granite, and the color contrast between the red rocks and green foliage.  I chose a long exposure to make the water silky smooth in this favorite nature photography image.

I knew I had to photography this area when I first saw Gridley Lake in the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area.  I was overjoyed to find the lake as a perfect mirror on this evening, allowing a beautiful reflection in the water for this landscape photography print.  Alas, the mosquitoes also appreciated the lack of wind, and feasted well that night.
