While hiking around Beaver Dam Lake in Illinois, I always admired the graceful curves of this gnarled cypress tree at the side of the lake.?ÿ This time, it was beautifully framed by the lush grasses and butterweed blossoms, making for a very popular fine art nature print.

On a trip through Arizona with my wife last December, we spent some time at Canyon de Chelly.?ÿ It's an amazing spot: deep, narrow canyons, Spider Rock pictured here, and of course the 700+ year old ruins built by the?ÿAncient Puebloans.?ÿ If only our houses would last so long! I was drawn to this early-morning fine art landscape photography print by the delicate light on the cliff walls, the contrasting warm highlights and cool shadows, and the sense of depth created by the foreground and the layers within the canyon.?ÿ It was a magical moment! ?ÿ

The unexpected early colorful dawn sky changed my planed location for my early morning photography hike to the Garden of the Gods. The few minutes surrounding sunrise were hectic, taking advantage of the amazing light. In this landscape photography print, I especially love how the sandstone cliffs glow, reflecting the red light of the sun as it breaks the horizon.

The red glow from the horizon highlights rocky outcrops in front of the purples of the early dawn: what's not to love?  The colors of nature at their finest!

Butterflies and flowers always bring joy to summer!

Trees arch over the water and are perfectly reflected in the lake through the fog. The peace and quiet was palpable during this unusual, foggy morning in the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area in central Illinois.  I took this image about 20 minutes before sunrise while sitting on a floating dock, and had to be very careful not to create ripples in the water that would disrupt the reflections!?ÿ Fine art nature photograph by McClusky Nature Photography.

I love the intense colors in the sky in late dusk, and how they color the frozen Dream Lake basin with a soft magenta glow at Rocky Mountain National Park. 

At pink of dusk, the mountains and trees are reflected in the still waters of Lilly Lake.?ÿ

The San Luis Valley is an area of contrasts, emphasized by the soft tones and colors of dusk: desert scrub, a large seasonal lake, the Great Sand Dunes, and behind them the towering Sangre de Cristo mountain range.?ÿ?ÿ

I still remember the first time I saw Wilkerson Pass.?ÿ It isn't really high as far as Colorado passes go, but it sure is spectacular: suddenly one is looking over the huge South Park valley to the grand Collegiate Peaks of the Sawatch Range...a spectacular view any time of year!

I always find the bubbling of a creek to be peaceful. In this nature photography image, the early fall colors accentuated the restfulness in Castlewood Canyon state Park, CO.?ÿ Of course that doesn't mean it was restful taking the image: I had to balance on rocks with my tripod, and they can get slippery.?ÿ Let's just say I had a chance to experience the "refreshing" water more than I intended ...

A golden meadow, aspen turning yellow and orange, a pine forest, and snow-capped East Beckwith Mountain standing above them all.?ÿ Beautiful!

I love the panorama at Wilkerson Pass overlooking the Collegiate Range any time of year.?ÿ But at dusk in the fall - spectacular!

I love the fall colors!  We tend to focus on colorful trees, but grasses and shrubs can take on their own beauty.  I was driving by this area for another shoot when I was awestruck by the vibrant golden colors of the varied plants and Gambel oak against the deep green pines and distant blue mountains.  Compare this nature image with its sister, "Fall Colors of Mt Herman: II" taken about 15 minutes later after the sun had set for this area, turning the palette to beautiful, varied pastels.

Stunning mountains, golden aspen, and a lake.?ÿ Who could ask for more?

My wife and I spent time in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado this fall, and it was a spectacular experience.?ÿ These mountains are always breathtaking, and the fall colors and snowy mountains enhanced the beauty. We had been following this river for a while.?ÿ I had been enjoying the stately?ÿelm (?) trees and colorful shrubs lining it, looking for a public bridge or curve in the road that would allow me a great shot.?ÿ Alas, it was difficult to find: either the river didn't lead the eye to a suitable "payoff", the light was wrong, or it was just too 'messy' with brush and dead trees and branches in the river.?ÿ That is until we found this location: beautiful lighting, colorful trees and brush along the river, and?ÿ the rocky river leading to the mountain replete with aspen and meadows, and interesting clouds in the sky.?ÿ?ÿ Do note the sister image: Fall River in the San Juan Mountains.?ÿ After struggling to decide whether I preferred the horizontal or vertical version of this fine art landscape image, I realized that both are great: sometimes you need a vertical image, and sometimes a landscape! ?ÿ

When my wife and I checked out the Carolinas for our next career move, we spent some time in Smoky Mountain National Park. The fall leaves were starting to turn, and we had a magical drive through the fall foliage. I was particularly struck by the Little River, and I love the way the trees bend over this peaceful, rocky river glowing with the golden light of fall. No wonder this is a favorite nature photography image!

I love the way the last light of the setting sun lights up the granite rocks, golden aspen, pines, and the distant peaks.

There is something magical about fog - perhaps our imaginations are set free to dream endless possibilities of what we'll find as we explore.?ÿ This morning the wind, snow, and fog coated the trees and bushes with the ice crystals of rime, further turning Spruce Mountain in to a fanciful landscape.?ÿ Fine Art Landscape Photography by John McClusky. ?ÿ
